Call for checks and balances in our justice system.
There are too many prisoners in our penal system who are either innocent or not culperble for the offences they have been convicted of. Once subject to a prison sentence it is next to impossible to exonerate one self with out a great deal of time and expense being expended, Regardless of new evidence or facts which allude or point to an unsafe and unjust conviction. Either the appeal process requires an overhaul or a body, panel or council outside of the immediate justice system with the jurisdiction and authority to make or refer any miscarriage of justice back to the courts. This way it may be dealt with in an expidiate manner thus minimizing the harm to the victim of a justice system that fails to deliver justice for all.

BUT
I do believe that we should take a leaf out of the Quality Control Handbook and have randomly chosen audits – if those find problems then the process will need to be improved -

Lester Williams commented 2016-12-02 20:44:41 +1300There have been entry of cases in the media as of late and there are plenty that don’t make it into the media. I’m not advocating for criminals getting away with crime, rather, when our sad excuse for a justice system cocks up, the cock up can be made right and expediately, not like the 20 years it took to sort out the Taina Pora case. I feel You are correct that our current penal system doesn’t do enough to address offenders and their criminal propensity but we need to ensure that justice is dispensed better than it at present. Remember, courts are courts of law and the law has very little to do with Justice. One can be convicted of perverting the course of justice but then the law itself can also pervert the course of what is just and lead to unjust outcomes. It happens more than you might think. Shit needs changing.

Tim O’Donnell commented 2016-12-02 20:26:53 +1300What evidence is there that there are so many people in prison that are innocent? “Not culpable of the crimes they were convicted of” ……. so the did it but that’s ok? I think people get of to often because of silly loopholes & you think more should?
