Free lunches at State Schools.

Free lunches at State Schools.

It is time that we ensured all children have access to nutritious food. We need to spend more money directly on children whose needs may not being met in the home. Initiatives like this need to be universal, not targeted, so as not to stigmatize or be subjected to arbitrary decision making by Government departments. We should be proud as a nation to do more for our children.

The goal is to feed kids, some will be coming to school having had nothing to eat. While some characteristics of food make be considered more desirable…local, seasonal etc…the primary goal would be basic nourishing food. As the goal is to feed kids, my opinion is that giving the food directly to children is the most direct and reliable way rather than a UBI. Thanks for the comments.

As far as I am aware, all schools in Italy provide lunches to the children. The fee is income based, but the max is about a Euro a day. Cooking food in bulk is presumably much cheaper than everyone bringing their own.

Would a UBI be a better way to achieve this?

If we can get our tax system right I think this is a good future plan. Ensuring no junk food in or near schools would be a good start

I would say the definition of “nutritious” is organic/local/sustainable, seasonal and balanced :)
