Be clear that TOP is about more than any set of policies. It's about a different style of politics
The public, and the media, are accustomed to parties being defined by their policies. So any list of TOP 7 policies runs the risk of permanently defining TOP in the minds of the public and the media. But it's my understanding, and my hope, that TOP is about much more than that: it is about an evidence-based approach to politics. I think TOP should be clear that the most important part of its mission - over and above any particular policies - is to bring an evidence-based voice to NZ politics.

John Gibson commented 2016-12-10 19:25:06 +1300I believe we need to focus on a very few key policies. Say 4 or 5 as a minimum and absolutely no more than 10. Otherwise we become trapped into having to dissipate our energies on promoting and defending an ever growing range of policies. Let’s identify the handful or so of “king hits” that have two key characteristics: first they must be game changers, not fringe policies; second they should be capable of being readily encapsulated into a practical negotiation package with whichever party forms the next government. This latter point means that that we should be prepared to accept pragmatic gradual adoption of a policy and go to the negotiation table with a clear idea of how we will achieve this.
