They should be teaching coding and programming from year one. Thoughts on that?

I am disgusted and imbarrassed with our countries education system. We under value our well educated teachers and undermine them through constant reviews of their activities and restricting their methods to narrow national practises. our teachers need to be empowered not hamstrung. our children need the encouragement to learn however suits them as individuals and progress needs to me measured relative to their current ability in relation to national standards, not where we believe they should be according to their age. Accomplishments need to be celebrated while failures embraced and learned from.

However, how can we train teachers better so they have the ability to connect with students and deal with high needs students?

I was a teacher before national standards came in. I trained ECE then became a new entrant team teacher. National standards resulted in a lot more testing and comparing and a pressure to focus on reading writing and maths. It broke my heart. I left. The children, parents and teachers were always under pressure the learn learn learn. Play and discovery were pushed to the side. Teachers were all exhausted and disheartened.

NZ need to learn to trust teachers and allow education to head towards best practise based on evidence and research. Education needs to STOP being a political football.

i definitely agree that schools are spending WAY to much time testing our abilities, when they should be teaching us harder more challenging work. I'm Y9 (Form 3) and i find year 11 work easy, KIDS AREN'T STUPID.

I totally think we need to value our teachers and respect them more. I know it is not a popular opinion but I think parents need to respect the teaching staff more. Interference by parents with half baked ideas and focusing on the needs of their child rather than what is best for all children.
More respect from kids in the classroom.
