Mandatory 10c tax on plastic bags.
A charge on plastic bags is a simple way to get consumers to change their behaviors. As a percentage of the total grocery spend, the charge is realistically less than 1%, but can have a great impact on consumers putting more consideration into their shopping decisions.

Tim O’Donnell commented 2016-11-28 14:26:58 +1300We should be doing the same for plastic bottles. It’s common overseas & didn’t seem to complicated. A partial refund was given by vending machines to promote recycling

Graeme Kiyoto-Ward commented 2016-11-25 21:57:17 +1300This is another idea where a tax woukd be appropriate for an ill where the cost is externalized from the consumer – this time to the environment. I’m supportive of ‘fix broken stuff’ tax incentives.

Tim O’Donnell commented 2016-11-25 16:23:51 +1300Not a top 7 issue but a good issue anyway. I agree it should be more than $0.10 . A large fine for those that don’t comply. The charge must flow down from the importation of the bags.
