Home Insulation

Home Insulation

This is the warmest place in winter I have ever lived in with the coldest houses (Southland) Even new houses are being built with bad solar design and poor insulation The time to fix this is with new build - it is so much cheaper then than at any time later People build houses with the minimum insulation - short sighted but what they do! We need to increase the minimum standard! The house I have just had built in Southland is a 160m2 three bedroom house that can be heated (the whole house) on the coldest Southland days with 1Kw electrical power - it's not rocket science!

Diagree with your views on glass or aluminium. Done right it’s very efficient. But the insulation could be looked at more. It is important to get the right levels

      Hi Tim
New houses “done to spec” are much better than old houses here – and still absolutely diabolical compared to standards in the USA or UK
If I had built my house “to spec” it would need over three times the heat to get to the same level of comfort

      Houses here are built with:
Aluminium joinery – it is horrible and completely useless
Too much glass – bakes you in summer and freezes you in winter
      Insufficient insulation
Building paper!!! – it pants and lets air through your inadequate insulation

We have fixed some of the absolutely worse things like those downlights that literally pumped the heat into the attic – but we are now about where the UK was in the 70’s

This is a pattern – the really cold places get it right first – then the not so bad – and finally we are moving towards a sensible level of insulation

Unsure where you’re coming from. New houses done to spec should be well insulated. It that isn’t the case I would agree with your position. I think we should do many new manditory requirements in a new build however. Catching fresh water, solar and any other long term community cost reducing ideas.
